Commercial Pilot Training in Bakersfield, CA

Prepare for the commercial pilot certificate with instruction from a commercial-rated CFI and CFII at KBFL Meadows Field.

The commercial pilot certificate

The commercial pilot certificate allows you to be paid to fly in certain operations and it holds you to a higher standard of precision and knowledge than the private pilot certificate. It is a step toward careers like flight instructing, aerial work and many professional flying jobs, and it is a rewarding challenge for any pilot who wants to hone their skills.

Jacob is a commercial pilot with an instrument rating, a CFI and a CFII, and has given over 5,000 hours of dual instruction in 16 years of teaching.

Requirements overview

  • At least 18 years old.
  • Hold at least a private pilot certificate and be able to read, speak, write and understand English.
  • Hold a second-class medical certificate to exercise commercial privileges.
  • Pass the commercial pilot knowledge test and practical test.
  • Meet the aeronautical experience requirements of 14 CFR 61.129, which include a total of 250 hours of flight time (under Part 61) with specified pilot-in-command, cross-country, instrument, complex, night and solo time.

Rules and standards change from time to time; always verify the current requirements and the commercial pilot Airman Certification Standards (ACS).

What commercial training covers

Commercial training builds on what you learned as a private pilot with more precise aircraft control, more advanced systems knowledge and higher standards. Typical areas include:

  • Complex airplane operations, including retractable landing gear, flaps and a controllable-pitch propeller.
  • Commercial maneuvers such as steep turns, chandelles, lazy eights, steep spirals and eights on pylons, flown to tight standards.
  • Power-off 180-degree accuracy approach and landing.
  • Advanced performance and emergency operations, aircraft systems, weather and commercial privileges and limitations.

Planning your commercial training

Complex airplane availability. The commercial practical test requires a complex (or turbine) airplane. The rental airplanes currently listed by Megahertz Sky Hub do not appear to include a complex airplane, so the complex-airplane portion of your training may require a different airplane. Talk with Jacob before planning your training so you can find the right fit.

If you do not yet have an instrument rating, consider instrument rating training first. It is not required for the commercial certificate but significantly expands commercial privileges and is useful training for any pilot.

Cost

Cost depends on how many hours you need and the airplane you fly. Flight instruction is $70 per hour, separate from airplane rental.

Frequently asked questions

What are the main requirements for a commercial pilot certificate?
Under 14 CFR Part 61 (subpart F) you must be at least 18, hold at least a private pilot certificate and meet aeronautical knowledge, experience and proficiency requirements, including a commercial knowledge test and practical test. The general experience requirement is 250 hours of flight time, with specific amounts of pilot-in-command, cross-country, instrument, complex airplane, night and solo time. Check the regulation for the complete list.
Do I need an instrument rating for a commercial certificate?
To earn a commercial certificate with an airplane category rating you do not need an instrument rating, but a commercial pilot without one is restricted from carrying passengers for hire on cross-country flights of more than 50 nautical miles or at night. For that reason, most commercial pilots earn an instrument rating first.
Is a complex airplane required?
The commercial practical test for a single-engine airplane must be taken in a complex airplane (retractable gear, flaps and a controllable-pitch propeller) or a turbine-powered airplane. Availability of a suitable airplane should be part of your planning; ask about options.

Airplane rental & avionics

Rent the airplane from Megahertz Sky Hub

Flight instruction is $70 per hour, separate from airplane rental. I teach as an independent CFI, and I work with Megahertz Sky Hub, the shop at KBFL that rents airplanes and also offers avionics services. Their rental fleet at Meadows Field (KBFL) includes a Cessna 172N (N6316D) and a Piper Cherokee PA-28-140 (N500KC), and their website currently lists rental at $172 per hour wet (fuel included). Rates and availability change, so confirm directly with the shop before you book.
