Discovery Flight in Bakersfield, CA

Try flying with a certified flight instructor out of KBFL Meadows Field. No experience needed.

What is a discovery flight?

A discovery flight, sometimes called an introductory flight, is a first airplane flight with a certified flight instructor. You sit in the left seat, learn about the airplane and, after a briefing, take the controls during the flight under your instructor's guidance. It is the easiest way to find out what flying is really like before you commit to training.

A discovery flight is $145. See the contact page to schedule and ask about availability.

What to expect

  1. Meet at KBFL Meadows Field. We'll go over the airplane, the controls and what the flight will look like.
  2. Preflight and briefing. You'll see how a pilot checks an airplane before every flight and hear a short briefing on what we'll do.
  3. The flight. After departure, you'll have the opportunity to fly the airplane, practice basic maneuvers and see Bakersfield and the surrounding area from the air.
  4. Debrief and next steps. We'll talk about the flight and, if you want to continue, outline what training toward a private pilot certificate would look like.

What to bring

  • A government-issued photo ID.
  • Comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes.
  • Sunglasses and water on warm days.
  • Your questions. Ask anything about training, time and cost.

Good to know

  • The airplane has weight limits. Tell us ahead of time how many people will be flying and their approximate weights so we can plan.
  • Flights depend on weather and airplane availability.
  • The airplane is rented separately from Megahertz Sky Hub; availability and rates should be confirmed with them.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a discovery flight cost?
A discovery flight is $145. Reach out through the lesson request form or by phone or text to schedule and check airplane availability.
Do I need any experience, a medical certificate or a student pilot certificate?
No experience is needed. On a discovery flight your instructor is the pilot in command, so you generally do not need a pilot or student certificate or a medical certificate for the flight itself. If you decide to continue training, your instructor will explain the next steps.
Can I log the time toward a pilot certificate?
Discovery flight time with a CFI can generally be logged as dual instruction if you pursue a certificate, provided the flight was flight training and is documented appropriately. Ask about it if you plan to continue.
What if the weather is bad?
Safety comes first. If the weather or conditions are not suitable, we'll reschedule. Central Valley fog, wind, low ceilings and summer heat can all affect flight plans.

Airplane rental & avionics

Rent the airplane from Megahertz Sky Hub

Flight instruction and airplane rental are separate. I teach as an independent CFI, and I work with Megahertz Sky Hub, the shop at KBFL that rents airplanes and also offers avionics services. Their rental fleet at Meadows Field (KBFL) includes a Cessna 172N (N6316D) and a Piper Cherokee PA-28-140 (N500KC), and their website currently lists rental at $172 per hour wet (fuel included). Rates and availability change, so confirm directly with the shop before you book.
