Flight Lessons in Bakersfield, CA

Learn to fly at KBFL Meadows Field with an independent CFI and CFII who has taught for 16 years and given over 5,000 hours of dual instruction.

What flight lessons with Jacob look like

Learning to fly is a mix of ground training and flight training. A typical lesson starts with a briefing on what you will do and why, continues with a flight where you practice the maneuvers or procedures, and ends with a debrief that covers what went well and what to focus on next. Between lessons you will study the material that supports what you are flying.

Jacob is an independent CFI and CFII who has taught for 16 years and given over 5,000 hours of dual instruction. Lessons are conducted under 14 CFR Part 61 and are based at KBFL Meadows Field Airport in Bakersfield, California.

Who flight lessons are for

  • Brand-new students who want to earn a private pilot certificate and learn to fly for fun, travel or a career.
  • Certificated pilots who need a flight review or want to build confidence and proficiency.
  • Private pilots ready to add an instrument rating or work toward a commercial certificate.
  • Instrument-rated pilots who have fallen out of currency and need an IPC.

Choose your path

If you are not sure where to start, a discovery flight is an easy first step. If you already know you want to earn your certificate, read about private pilot training and then request a lesson.

Flying and learning in Bakersfield

KBFL is a towered airport, so students get early practice talking with air traffic control and operating in controlled airspace, a skill that pays off later in your training. Around Bakersfield you will find the San Joaquin Valley to the north and west, the Sierra foothills to the east and the Tehachapi Mountains to the south. That terrain supports good scenery and good training for cross-country flying, but it also means paying attention to weather, including winter fog and summer heat and high density altitude. Learning to plan around those factors is part of becoming a safe pilot.

What it costs

Flight instruction is $70 per hour, separate from airplane rental. Megahertz Sky Hub bills the airplane rental separately.

The cost of flight training is made up of a few parts: the airplane rental rate multiplied by flight hours, instruction time (flight and ground) and other costs such as books or software, the FAA knowledge test, medical exam and the practical test with a designated pilot examiner. Megahertz Sky Hub's website currently lists its rental airplanes at $172 per hour wet (fuel included), subject to change, so confirm with the shop. Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to learn to fly?
It depends on how often you fly, how you study and the weather. The FAA minimum for a private pilot certificate under Part 61 is 40 hours of flight time, but the national average is typically higher, and many students take 60 to 80 hours or more. Flying more frequently generally means you retain more between lessons and progress faster.
Do I need a medical certificate before my first lesson?
Not to begin dual instruction. You generally need an FAA medical certificate before you fly solo, so many instructors recommend getting one early so there are no surprises. An FAA Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) can answer questions about your eligibility.
How much does flight instruction cost?
Flight instruction is $70 per hour, separate from airplane rental. Megahertz Sky Hub bills airplane rental separately, and other costs such as books or software, the medical exam, the knowledge test and the practical test are additional.
Is airplane rental included in lesson prices?
No. Instruction and airplane rental are separate. You pay for the airplane (for example, from Megahertz Sky Hub) and for your instructor's time. Flight instruction is $70 per hour, and Megahertz Sky Hub bills airplane rental separately.

Airplane rental & avionics

Rent the airplane from Megahertz Sky Hub

Flight instruction is $70 per hour, separate from airplane rental. I teach as an independent CFI, and I work with Megahertz Sky Hub, the shop at KBFL that rents airplanes and also offers avionics services. Their rental fleet at Meadows Field (KBFL) includes a Cessna 172N (N6316D) and a Piper Cherokee PA-28-140 (N500KC), and their website currently lists rental at $172 per hour wet (fuel included). Rates and availability change, so confirm directly with the shop before you book.
